Updated FAQ’s 2/14/18
What is the Child Check Systems installation deadline?Title 13, Section 1294 of the California Code of Regulations states that the Child Safety Alert System must be installed on or before the beginning of the 2018/2019 school year. The county superintendent of schools or school districts or the owner or operator of a private school determines the beginning of the school year.
When was the Child Safety Alert System regulations released.Child Safety Alert System regulations finalized version was released in January 2018. What this means for school districts with a Child Safety Alert System installed prior to 2018, chances are those systems are not compliant with the new regulations. Contact A-Z Bus Sales for information on how to make your current system California complaint.
Who is required to have the Child Safety Alert System installed?Installation is required on all school buses, school pupil activity buses (SPAB), youth buses, and childcare vehicles.
What types of Child Safety Alert System units are required?Units that are compliant with the California Code of Regulations, Section 1294 are acceptable. There are some units that are currently not compliant with the regulation. Because this is often changing, we recommend you call an A-Z Bus Sales representative for more information.
Is there a published list of approved Child Safety Alert Systems (CSAS) school districts may purchase from? The CHP is not charged with the authority to approve or authorize any system or piece of equipment. Therefore, no list is published. A-Z Bus Sales is an authorized dealer for the Child Check-Mate, the Doran system installed on Blue Bird school buses, and several other child safety alert systems. Contact A-Z Bus Sales to learn more about the systems we sell and install.
Must the Child Check System be hardwired into the bus?The California Highway Patrol stresses performance based versus prescriptive based systems, meaning if a wireless option is available, it does not necessarily preclude the system from being compliant with Section 1294 of the regulations. However, in most instances, hardwiring is required for the system to be compliant. We recommend contacting an A-Z Bus Sales representative for up-to-date information about your specific bus type.
Is the CHP grandfathering school districts who have already installed Child Safety Alert Systems prior to the approval of Section 1294?At this time, the California Highway Patrol is not grandfathering schools who have already installed child safety alert systems that do not meet the new regulatory requirements. If your child safety alert system does not meet the current conditions, you are required to install a system that does meet the requirement stated in Section 1294.
What are the minimum requirements for the Child Safety Alert System?A-Z Bus Sales follows all of the guidelines stated in Title 13, Section 1294 of the California Code of Regulations. Please review the regulations here for the minimum requirements.

The Child Safety Alert Systems (Child Check Alarm) Bill
Child Safety is no joke. That is why Governor Brown signed SB1072 into law on September 27, 2016. SB1072, also known as the “Paul Lee School Bus Safety Law” is named after a special-needs student from Whittier who died in September 2015 after being left unattended on a school bus for several hours.
The law requires all school buses to be equipped with a Child Safety Alert System (CSAS) that prompts the driver to inspect all seats before leaving the bus. The system must be approved by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and installed on all school buses, school pupil activity buses (SPAB), youth buses, and child care vehicles by the start of the 2018 / 2019 school year.
The Child Check-Mate System® is by far the more popular choice, however, A-Z Bus Sales offers several alternatives, depending on your districts needs and budget.
